MAC Volleyball Tournament

The Ohio Bobcat volleyball team and the OU Alumni Varsity Band will be playing in the first round of the MAC Tournament at 7 p.m. this Friday, November 18. The tournament is being held at the Spire Sports Plex in Geneva.

We are the #2 seed and our opponent will be none other than Miami, so let's get a good OU crowd there!

If Ohio wins, the team and the band will be back for round 2 on Saturday night at 5 pm.

Ohio (7-3) is at the top of the standings, and has a great chance to go to the MAC championship game in Detroit on December 2.

First, though, the Bobcats have to close out the regular season with a strong showing against our big rivals, Miami (3-3).

Miami comes to Athens on Tuesday, November 22, in a game that will be featured on ESPN 2. Join fellow Bobcat fans at a game watch party near you!

OU Alum's Whale of a Tale

An unexpected critical hit of the fall season, The Whale opens November 4 in Cleveland, after winning coveted Critics’ Picks endorsements from both the New York Times and the Washington Post.

The film was brought here by Ohio University alumnus Eric Desatnik ('01), who joined superstars Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson as the film’s executive producers.

“The Whale emphasizes the importance of family and home,” said Desatnik, “so to be able to bring this film to my family and to my hometown is a dream come true.”

The Whale, the true story of a young killer whale who lost contact with his pod and tried to make friends with humans, runs from November 4 through November 10 in both the Capitol Theatre in Cleveland and the Chagrin Cinemas in Chagrin Falls. It is rated G.

The Ohio University Women's Club of Greater Cleveland will be awarding ascholarship to a high school senior woman from the Greater Cleveland area whowill be attending Ohio University as a freshmanin the fall of 2012. Since 1951, more than 100 such scholarships have been awarded to OU-bound women!

These awards are based on thefollowing criteria, along with an essay:

· An unweighted3.5 accumulated GPA on a scale of 4.0 for six semesters

· An ACT score of at least 25 and/or an SAT score of at least 1140

If you meet theabove criteria and are interested in applying for this scholarship, please use the link below for the scholarship application.

OUWC Scholarship Application

Applications can also be picked up from your local Greater Cleveland area highschool guidance counselor or can be requested from Karen Shallcross, the OUWC Student RelationsChairperson: 216-524-0863; kshallx@prodigy.net.

This scholarship can range in value from a partial scholarship, up to afull tuition scholarship, for the freshman year only. The maximum astudent can receive is an amount, when considered with other awards, thattotals tuition only.

Dear OHIO Parents and Families,

Today, The Princeton Review released its annual 'party school' rankings list. I am extremely disappointed that this year OHIO was placed at the #1 spot. I do not believe that this is an accurate reflection of the OHIO University experience or the sentiment expressed by the majority of our students.

The first thing to note is that this ranking is arbitrary and unscientific. The information is obtained anonymously from students via an electronic survey. The survey respondents total only 122,000 of the 12.1 million students enrolled in public or private 4-year institutions across the country. According to The Princeton Review, each campus is likely to have as few as 300 student respondents. In our case, that equates to less than 1.5% of our student population.

Though Ohio University has received notoriety from some large, off-campus street-festivals, we continue to work closely with the City of Athens to minimize the dangerous behavior that may occur. As I have repeatedly stated to each student who enrolls at Ohio University, students are accountable for their behavior both on and off campus. It is also important to note that more than half of all the arrests that take place at these street festivals are students from other universities who come to Athens to visit and partake in this behavior.

Ohio University does not tolerate high-risk or underage drinking behaviors. Each year students make choices that cause them to be suspended for alcohol or drug violations of our Code of Conduct. The Princeton Review can create a false sense that we are not concerned or do not hold students accountable. It is important for you to know that we are concerned about this high-risk behavior and continue to proactively address and respond to the consequences of this behavior.

This data is not representative of our students. Other research efforts by Ohio University, such as our Alcohol and Other Drug survey and our Student Involvement Study, have shown recent decreases in the incidence of alcohol consumption.

Additionally, the Princeton Review ranking can overshadow the many efforts we have undertaken on campus to educate students about the dangers of high-risk behavior. Several of these initiatives are listed below:

Since 2005, we require a mandatory alcohol education program (AlcoholEdu) for all incoming new students.
We provide peer-to-peer education through Greek Life organizations, Learning Communities, first-year seminars, and in the residence halls
We continue to be involved in a social media campaign entitled "Stop at the Buzz," which focuses on harm reduction and education.
We have implemented a strict two-strike alcohol policy for those who use alcohol in an illegal or irresponsible manner. This includes parental notification for those under the age of 21.
We conduct an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) survey every two years to gain information about high-risk behaviors of our students.
Beginning this fall, we will increase our judicial fines/fees for alcohol and other drug infractions from $100 to up to $200-250.
Beginning this fall, for each alcohol or drug offense, students found in violation will be mandated to complete hours of service to the Ohio University and/or Athens community.

As a result of these initiatives, I'm pleased to report that we have seen significant positive progress in the behavior of our students, including:

A 49% decrease in the number of alcohol-related judicial violations since 2005-06.
A 18% decrease in the number of first-year students who report high-risk drinking behaviors since 2007.
An 8% decrease in the number of overall students who report high-risk drinking behavior since 2007.

We have made significant progress in changing the culture at Ohio University. The Princeton Review ranking does not reflect this progress or the expectations we have of our students. Please support our continued efforts by using this opportunity to have an honest conversation regarding high-risk behaviors with your sons and/or daughters.

OHIO: Compass | OU-COM receives major transformative gift

The Osteopathic Heritage Foundations’ $105 million award to Ohio University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine represents the largest private donation ever given to a college or university in Ohio.  This gift will be used to address some of the most pressing health care issues across the state and the nation – the impending shortage of primary care physicians and the diabetes epidemic.

Bobcat Caravan Comes to Northeast Ohio

The 2011 Bobcat Club Caravan is coming to a location near you this month.

All alumni, Bobcat Club members, fans, and supporters are invited to attend these free events and visit with Ohio Athletics staff and coaches. The event is fun for the entire family and includes free food, insider updates and prizes!

Coach Frank Solich and Coach John Groce are confirmed for both the Akron/Canton and Cleveland Bobcat Caravans, so you can get updates on the OU football and basketball teams and ask questions about plans for the upcoming seasons.

The Ensemble Theater presents A Free Man of Color at Notre Dame College's Performing Arts Center. The show is about John Newton Templeton, the first African-American graduate in Ohio, graduating from Ohio University in 1828. Meet the Ensemble

The play is being directed by Tony Sias, who is an MFA graduate of Ohio University and the Director of Arts Education for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
Diane Mull, who plays the part of Jane Wilson is also a BFA graduate of Ohio University.
Free Man of Color is the Cleveland premiere of playwright Charles Smith, the head of the Professional Playwriting Program at Ohio University. A recipient of the 2008 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award, he is also a member of the Playwrights Ensemble at the Tony Award-winning Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago, and an alumnus playwright of the Tony Award-winning New Dramatists in New York. Smith will give a talk back and greet the general public after the Feb. 19 performance.

Carter Nedley Golf Classic

In January 2009, thirteen-month-old Carter Nedley, son of former Greater Cleveland Alumni Chapter President Jason Nedley ('98, '06) and Lisa Nedley ('98), was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). With a survival rate of less than 50 percent, AML is among the most difficult pediatric cancers to treat.

Still, for the next fourteen months, Carter bravely fought his disease. Through lengthy stays in three hospitals across Ohio he endured several rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone-marrow transplant. Tragically, however, Carter passed away in February 2010.

To honor their son's life, the Nedleys established The Carter Nedley Foundation to help other families in Northeast Ohio affected by childhood cancer. They have scheduled the first Carter Nedley Golf Classic for noon on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Black Brook Golf Course in Mentor, Ohio.

Players receive eighteen holes of golf with a cart, two drink tickets, a clubhouse lunch before the outing, and a catered cookout dinner (steak or chicken) at the finish. Prizes will be awarded to the winning foursome and to those players with the longest drive and longest putt.

Players also receive a ticket for the raffle, and are eligible to purchase additional tickets. Prizes include

* gift certificates to area eateries like Cabana's Island Restaurant, Chester's Legacy Tavern, Corks Wine Bar, Flannery's Pub, and Pickle Bill's Lobster House;
* tickets to Northfield Park, the Lake County Captains, Hilarities 4th Street Theatre, the Lake Erie Monsters, and the Cleveland Gladiators;
* a $50 gift certificate to Dick's Sporting Goods;
* a one-month family membership to the Mentor Heisley Racquet and Fitness Club;
* a ninety-minute swing evaluation at golfTEC;
* a complete cornhole game set from King Toss;
* a baseball autographed by the Cleveland Indians' Shin-Soo Choo;
* a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey autographed by Mo Williams;
* and more!

Foursomes are priced at $400.

A dinner-only option has been added, also, for those who would like to participate but do not wish to golf. The dinner-only option, which includes the same catered steak or chicken dinner, one drink ticket, and eligibility to purchase raffle tickets, is $30.

All event proceeds benefit The Carter Nedley Foundation, which serves children in Northeast Ohio affected by cancer, along with their families; raises funds to support research into treatments for pediatric cancer; and advocates for issues relevant to the treatment of pediatric cancer.

Registration is fast and easy. Simply go to the Carter Nedley Golf Classic page and scroll to the bottom, where you'll see a drop-down box under the heading "PACKAGES." Registration packages for one to four players or the dinner-only option for one or two individuals then can be selected from the drop-down box. After you've selected your registration package, simply click the yellow "Buy Now" button and you'll be transferred to a secure session on PayPal, where you can make your payment easily with any major credit card.

About the Film

Trailerpark, the feature-length film based on a Russell Banks short story collection, was entirely produced by students in the School of Media Arts and Studies (formerly Telecommunications) at Ohio University.

More than 70 students from different schools within the university collaborated on this project. The students showed their commitment and dedication to making this dream a reality, spending countless hours each week not just on the film, but also maintaining full academic course schedules.

Trailerpark may be the only feature-length film to be produced completely by undergraduate students as part of a course in a college curriculum. Extensive research has found no similarly structured project.

Tickets for Ohio's NCAA First Round game on Thursday, March 18, are currently on sale.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.ohiobobcats.com or by calling the ticket office at 1-800-575-CATS (2287) or 740-593-1300.
The deadline for ALL ticket orders is Tuesday, March 16 at noon, eastern standard time.
Tickets are $75 for the evening session (Ohio vs. Georgetown at 7:25 p.m. and Tennessee vs. San Diego St which will tip-off approximately 30 minutes after the Ohio game).
The ticket allotment distributed to Ohio by the NCAA is extremely limited. Ohio Bobcat Club Members will be guaranteed tickets. Non-Ohio Bobcat Club Members will receive confirmation via e-mail by Tuesday at 1 p.m. if you will NOT be allotted tickets. All credit cards will be charged at the ticket-order deadline of Tuesday, March 16 at noon.

All tickets will be available for pick-up at the Dunkin' Donuts Center (Providence, R.I.) starting one-and-a-half hours prior to the Ohio University session.

The Bobcats came to Cleveland to do two things: kick some ass and chew some bubblegum ... and they're all out of bubblegum.

After stomping Kent State on Thursday, OU stifled Miami Friday night and will face Akron in the MAC tournament championship game at 6 tonight.

Tickets

A ticket for the championship game is $32. Student tickets are $10 with a valid student ID.

All tickets must be purchased at Quicken Loans Arena. An Ohio table will be set up at the main entrance to the Arena. By purchasing a ticket at the Ohio table, you will sit in the Ohio fan section and help Ohio reach its mandatory ticket allotment set by the MAC.

Bobcat Bash

There will be a pregame reception at Zocalo (2071 E. 4th Street), beginning at 4 p.m. Enjoy complimentary appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks.

Moms Weekend — one of the most popular events at OU — will be here before you know it!

If you're interested in traveling to Athens for the family weekend, the Parents Club of Greater Cleveland has set up a special package that includes round-trip travel by motor coach and accommodations at Bromley Hall. The package is designed to provide everything you need within a short walk; you can’t get closer to campus!

Pitchers and catchers are reporting in Goodyear, which means it's time for a grumpy Clevelander's fancy to lightly turn to thoughts of spring training.

Make plans to join other Bobcats at the ballpark this summer when the Tribe takes on the Mets on Wednesday, June 16. This is also a "Fill the House for Charity" night that will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Before the game, OU alumni, family, and friends are invited to meet up at Flannery's for some pizza and assorted appetizers. (Cash bar available.) The pre-game event starts at 5; first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Copeland Cares seeks contact information for 'Bobcats in uniform'

The Copeland Cares campaign is looking for the names and military addresses of Bobcats in uniform, as well as donations for care packages to be shipped in March. All Ohio University employees, students and alumni who are serving overseas in the military are eligible to receive an anonymous care package.

Bringing the Funk to Pasadena

The Ohio University Marching Band will perform in the world-famous Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year’s Day.

The Tournament of Roses Parade is seen by approximately one million in-person spectators, a domestic audience of 40 million television viewers, and an additional estimated 350 million television viewers in over 100 countries.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. EST and will be nationally televised on the ABC and NBC networks, Hallmark Channel, Travel Channel, Univision and several others. The Marching 110 is scheduled to perform in the middle of the parade's more than 90 units.

Bobcat fans, the game of the year is here — Ohio vs. Temple for the outright MAC East title!

Don't miss any of the action Friday in Peden Stadium as the 'Cats will host their last regular season game of the year and scratch for another MAC East title. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.

This game is huge! All season ticket holders should have received a letter in the mail from Coach Solich offering an allotment of free tickets to this game as a way of saying thank you. As another form of saying thank you to fans, Ohio Athletics is offering all general admission tickets to the Temple game for only $5! That's only five bucks to see a game that will crown a champion.

On Monday night, the Marching 110 is going to rock out at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus. The theater opens at 7 p.m.; the show — featuring all of the music played during the 2009 marching season — starts at 8. All 110 fans know that the show is well worth the trip!

Monsters, convicts and even Jesus traveled to Court Street Saturday night to raise a ruckus - resulting in a few arrests and disputes.

Police said Halloween 2009 was uneventful, despite a couch fire on Palmer Street, and yielded about the same number of arrests as last year.

Football Battles Archrival Miami

On Saturday, Ohio Football returns to Peden Stadium for a Homecoming battle with rival Miami. The Bobcats are 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAC, and are coming off two consecutive MAC road wins. The 'Cats most recently downed Akron 19-7 on Saturday, and you can read the recap here.

Kickoff for Homecoming is set for 2:00 p.m., and good seats are still available. "Be Seen in Green", as all fans are encouraged to wear GREEN to the game. To purchase tickets, visit the Ohio Athletics Ticketing Site here.
